Vietnam’s SGB fail to qualify for League of Legends world championship group stage

Saigon Buffalo crashed out of the League of Legends World Championship after losing to Spain’s MAD Lions in an elimination round.

After winning the first two matches against Istanbul Wild Cats (Turkey) and Isurus (Argentina), SGB lost to DRX (South Korea), MAD Lions and RNG (China).

They finished fourth and had to play MAD again on Tuesday in the elimination round for a berth in the main event.

The runner-up in the Vietnam Championship Series put out their best lineup including their in-form player Shogun.

SGB’s best game was the second when they got an advantage at the start and made two kills. The team increased their intensity, leaving the opponent no chance to regroup, and won that game.

But in the other three games, SGB let MAD claim the early advantage. The wrong choice of characters put the team in a difficult situation, and they quickly lost control, even as MAD showed why they are the winner of the 2021 LoL European Championship (LEC).

They were smart enough to avoid unnecessary encounters and target SGB’s weaknesses to break the team.

MAD won 3-1 to advance to the playoff, where they will take on EG of the U.S. for a slot in the group stage of the main event.

After SGB’s elimination, GAM are the only Vietnamese team to remain in the tournament, having qualified directly for the group stage where they will face Rogue (Europe), DRX (South Korea) and TES (China).

The 2022 LoL World Championships being held from September 29 to November 5 have brought together 24 teams from 10 regions.

It has prize money of US$2.3 million.
