Vietnam’s Asian champion among world top 10 boxers

Le Huu Toan, the WBA Asia minimum weight belt holder, has been named among the top 10 global boxers by World Boxing Association (WBA).

Toan is in 10th place, behind boxers from Thailand, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, the Philippines and South Africa.

On March 20 this year, Toan beat Thai boxer Kitidech Hirunsuk to claim the minimum weight WBA Asia belt after 12 rounds at Saigon Sports Club in Ho Chi Minh City.

This is the third time for a Vietnamese boxer to hold an Asia belt. Before Toan, Tran Van Thao claimed the super flyweight WBA Asia belt in 2017 and Truong Dinh Hoang the super middleweight WBA Asia belt in 2020.

Toan, 29, has been the national minimum weight champion for the past two years although he had only started his boxing career three years ago after a long period as an athlete and coach of the traditional martial arts Vovinam.

He will not compete in SEA Games 31 to be hosted by Vietnam in May as there’s no boxing event for minimum weight. Instead, he will prepare to defend his WBA Asia belt in three to six months.
