Vietnam’s 1st Omicron patient discharged from Hanoi hospital after two weeks

A Vietnamese man returning from the U.K., the first person diagnosed with the Omicron variant of Covid-19, was discharged from hospital Sunday after two weeks of treatment.

The 108 Military Hospital in Hanoi where he received treatment, said he was isolated for two weeks but did not show any symptoms.

He tested negative on January 1 and was discharged, and has to closely monitor his health at home, it said in a press release.

He landed in Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport on December 19, tested positive and was sent to the hospital.

Genetic sequencing confirmed he was infected with the Omicron, or B.1.1.529 variant.

Since then the number has increased to 20, all arriving from abroad. All are in stable condition and did not show any symptoms.

Omicron, first identified in late November, has raised fresh alarms due to its high number of mutations and higher transmissibility.

Over 100 countries and territories have detected the variant, including many in the Asia-Pacific like Australia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea.
