Vietnamese sailor spots eight Burmese adrift at sea, enables rescue

Eight Burmese nationals adrift at sea were rescued after they were spotted by a Vietnamese crew member who informed his captain.

They have been taken to Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in the southern coast.

The Panamanian vessel TRUMP SW, which has 22 crew members including seven Vietnamese, was sailing from China to Indonesia to receive goods.

On August 26, Vietnamese crew member Nguyen Chi Thanh saw an orange object floating in the sea. Upon closer inspection, he saw several people wearing life vests, hanging onto a large plastic tank and screaming for help.

Thanh informed the ship’s captain and the people were rescued. One of them was carrying a leg injury.

On August 29, the TRUMP SW docked at a port in Vung Tau and handed over the rescued people to local border security forces.

All the rescued men can only speak their native language, so local authorities have not been able to ascertain how they were cast adrift. An investigation has been launched, authorities said.
