Vietnamese PM wants to increase trade, tourism with China

Vietnam and China should expand trade and tourism between the two countries, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh told Secretary of Hainan Province Shen Xiaoming Wednesday during the latter’s visit to Vietnam.

Chinh welcomed Xiaoming on his first trip to Vietnam as the Secretary of Hainan Province and expressed confidence that the visit would promote partnership and cooperation between Hainan and Vietnam across a variety of sectors.

The PM affirmed the importance of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and China, which he said was in the spirit of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation and the diversification and expansion of foreign relations.

Chinh encouraged the implementation of high-level agreements reached during Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s official visit to China in October last year.

He called on the two countries to cooperate in all fields, especially in balancing trade. He encouraged both sides to increase investment and launch more exchange programs between the two neighboring peoples.

The PM then asked China to include Vietnam on its list of countries now available for tourism activities.

Chinh also called for peace and stability in the East Sea, internationally known as the South China Sea, in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Regarding cooperation with Hainan Province, Chinh suggested the province strengthen connections with Vietnamese localities, including Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Ninh province.

He wanted Hainan and Vietnamese localities to promote tourism and transportation connections, while also partnering in education, healthcare, cultural exchange and climate change activism.

Chinh pointed out that maritime search and rescue operations, the humane treatment of fishermen and the maintenance of peace, stability and cooperation at sea were some of the most important issues for the two nations.

Shen Xiaoming said Hainan’s cooperation with Vietnamese provinces was important, strong and slated to grow. He emphasized that in the near future Hainan Province will coordinate with Vietnam’s localities to implement high-level agreements between the two countries.

The province will soon restore flights and cruise routes to Vietnam and establish a Vietnam Trade Promotion Office. It will strive to increase the import of Vietnamese agricultural products, including coconuts, to make practical contributions to the China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
