Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will attend the May 12-13 U.S.-ASEAN summit in Washington D.C. at the invitation of U.S President Joe Biden, the foreign ministry has confirmed.
“Prime Minister Chinh will lead the Vietnamese delegation to attend the summit and pay a working visit to the U.S. as also work with the United Nations,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said Thursday at a press conference.
Hang noted that the U.S. – ASEAN special summit was taking place in commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the relationships between both sides.
She also said that after 27 years of diplomatic relations, the ties between Vietnam and the U.S. have witnessed significant progress on the basis of mutual interest and respect for each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political systems.
Vietnam hopes and stands ready to work with the Biden administration on further strengthening and deepening bilateral relations in an effective and sustainable manner for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world, she added.
The White House had announced in February that President Biden would host a special summit March 28-29 between the U.S. and leaders of Southeast Asian nations. The event was delayed and will be held next month.
