Vietnamese-grown seedless lychee exported to Japan

Seedless lychee, grown commercially for the first time in the central province of Thanh Hoa, has been exported to Japan, where it is sold at VND800,000 ($34) a kilogram.

The fruit, which was imported and grown experimentally on 30 hectares, is has a high yield, and 1,100 kilograms were exported to Japan and also the UK, according to the province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

It contains less sugar than normal lychees and therefore even people with diabetes can safely consume it.

In Vietnam it is sold at the same price range, which is 20 times normal lychee.

Before it was grown in Vietnam, Vietnamese traders used to sell imports from Japan at up to VND5 million per kilogram.

The company that is growing the seedless lychee, Ho Guom – Song Am High Tech Agriculture, has set aside 1,000 hectares for it.

Its current 30-ha farm can produce around 15 tons by the end of June.

In the northern province of Bac Giang, in 2019 over 500 seedless lychee trees were planted and they produced high yields last year.

But the province is still in the process of researching it and not producing it commercially.
