Vietnam tennis ace defeats Bangkok Open’s number one seed

Ly Hoang Nam defeated first seed Alastair Gray in the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger Tour’s Bangkok Open on Friday.

Before the game, Gray was the favorite to win the match with 62 places higher than Nam (344th) on world ranking and being the number one seed of the tournament. He also had the height advantage (1.93 m), which helps him in powerful serves. However, these advantages did not work when he played Nam.

The Vietnam number one player had some good strikes and defended well, which helped him win 6-4 in the first set.

After that, Gray made mistake after mistake and lost in the first game of the second set. He gradually came back and leveled 4-4. Nam also showed his fighting spirit and led 6-5. In the decisive game, Grey was stunned by Nam’s accurate and powerful strikes as he constantly failed to get the ball over the net, handling the 7-5 victory for the Vietnamese after one hour 42 minutes.

Nam will face Australia’s Dane Sweeny in the semifinals.

After great success on the ITF Men’s World Tennis Tour with four consecutive titles and one runner-up medal within just two months, Nam’s aim is to improve his ATP World Ranking in tournaments at a higher level.

Bangkok Open is a competition in the ATP Challenger Tour system with a prize pool of $37,520, which is much bigger than an ITF Men’s World Tennis tournament. The event is taking place from August 22 to 29.
