Vietnam star cueist takes down world number one

Ma Minh Cam defeated Belgian Frederic Caudron 3-1 at the world championship of Professional Billiards Association (PBA) on Wednesday.

Before the last game of the group stage, both Cam and Caudron had won their previous two matches. In the first round, Caudron won 15-4 to lead 1-0. But he didn’t expect Cam to come back that strong with victories in the next three rounds with scores 15-11, 15-8 and 15-2 to secure the 3-1 overall win. His average point per turn during this game was 2.882.

Cam concluded the group stage with three straight wins. He had defeated South Korea’s Park Kwang-yeol 3-1 and Yim Sung-kyun 3-0.

His average point per turn since the start of the tournament has been 1.922, only behind Belgian Eddy Leppens with 1.938.

Caudron is the former number one of World Union of Billards UMB, having won the World Cup 21 times and world championship three times. He switched to PBA in 2019 and held the number one spot there since.

The other Vietnamese cueist at the tournament, Nguyen Huynh Phuong Linh, also got three wins in the group stage and advanced to the next round.

PBA was formed in South Korea in 2019. Cueists who switched to PBA will not be allowed to compete in tournaments of UMB.

The world championship of PBA takes place from March 19 to 28 with a prize pool of $328,000, three times the pool of the UMB world champs. The winner will pocket $164,000.
