Vietnam president to attend King Charles coronation ceremony

State President Vo Van Thuong will attend the coronation ceremony of King Charles III next week at the invitation of the British royal family.

Thuong’s working trip will take place from May 4-6, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Friday.

At a meeting with British Ambassador to Vietnam Iain Frew on Friday, Thuong expressed his delight at the development of the Vietnam – U.K. strategic partnership.

The president hoped Britain would continue to help Vietnam improve its healthcare capacity, develop its pharmaceutical industry, and assist Vietnam in building a resilient health system, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Frew said the U.K. is ready to provide financial and equipment support to help Vietnam fulfill its commitments made at the 2021 U.N. Climate Change Conference (COP26).

He also added the U.K. government desires to cooperate more closely in the field of renewable energy, which is Britain’s strength.

Charles and his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, will be formally crowned on May 6 in a solemn religious ceremony at London’s Westminster Abbey where the coronation of kings and queens has taken place for the best part of a thousand years.

They will travel from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey by way of the Diamond Jubilee State Coach led by six Windsor Grey horses, according to the royal family’s official website.

The carriage was originally created for Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate the 60th anniversary of her reign in 2012.

Charles will then be anointed, blessed and consecrated by the Archbishop and receive the royal orb and scepters before St Edward’s Crown is placed on his head. This will officially make him King Charles III.

2023 marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the U.K. and Vietnam.

As of November last year, the U.K. was among the top 15 foreign investors in Vietnam, with 500 projects worth a total registered capital of $4.19 billion, up 5.3% compared to 2021.

Two-way trade turnover last year reached $6.83 billion, up 3.4%year-on-year. The total export value of Vietnamese goods shipped the U.K. in 2022 reached $6.06 billion, up 5.2% year-on-year.

Education is an important area of cooperation between the two countries. About 13,000 Vietnamese students are studying in the U.K.
