Vietnam mulls free tablets for poor families

The Ministry of Information and Communications has put forward a plan to give each poor family a tablet if they cannot afford one.

In a draft circular it is putting forward for feedback, the ministry said each poor family should be given a tablet in case they have not received it from any other benefactors or charity programs.

The tablets will be given first to families in “extremely poor” and remote areas, stated the circular.

Families that have made contributions to socio-economic development will also be subjected to the program.

Tablets must meet the minimum technical and quality requirements to serve the needs of online learning.

The government approved in 2021 a program to provide public-utility telecommunications services until 2025, which held that 800,000 poor families would be either given a tablet or funds to buy smartphones.
