Vietnam lost 3-4 to Myanmar in the third-place playoff of the AFF Women’s Championship on Sunday, losing their chance to win a bronze.
After losing to the Philippines in the semifinal, coach Mai Duc Chung said he would focus to help the team regain their best physical and mental state. Vietnam had expected to secure the bronze medal, especially as they had defeated Myanmar four times and tied one time in their last five matches.
But Vietnam had a less-than-satisfactory performance right at the beginning of the match, allowing Myanmar to score in the 9th minute. Many of Vietnam’s key players sat on the bench for the match.
After a lost goal, Vietnam tried to go on the offense and continually applied pressure on Myanmar, before scoring an equalizing goal in the 24th minute.
Vietnam continued to score another goal at the 39th mark, before losing a goal to Myanmar at the 58th mark, equalizing the scoreboard to 2-2.
Chung were forced to make some substitutions to apply the pressure back to Myanmar, allowing Vietnam to score another goal at the 81st mark.
But Myanmar scored another goal at the 84th mark, equalizing the scoreboard to 3-3. Vietnam lost to Myanmar through a penalty shoot-out, putting the final scoreboard at 3-4.
In the final, hosts Philippines clinched their maiden AFF Women’s Championship title after beating Thailand 3-0.
