Two goals in five minutes helped Vietnam beat Thailand 2-0 in the first play-off game of Women’s World Cup 2023 on Tuesday.
Despite going up against the archrival in Southeast Asia, Vietnam didn’t face many difficulties. They had 58 percent of possession, 13 shots with four on target. Thailand had more shots (15) but only one of them on target.
The shortage of players due to Covid-19 made Thailand’s power reduced significantly. After the first few minutes of caution, Vietnam realized that the opponent didn’t have enough firepower to cause them trouble and started pushing forward more. They exploited Thailand’s weakness, the right flank thanks to great pace of the wingers and the full-back.
Vietnam found the opener in the 19th minute, with Huynh Nhu tapping it in after Pham Hai Yen assisted her with a pass.
Five minutes later, Vietnam doubled the lead. From a corner taken by Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung, both Yen and Thai Thi Thao jumped up to head the ball in and the goal was counted for Thao. With a comfortable lead, Vietnam slowed down and subbed out key players to prepare for the next game, at the same time giving chances for young players.
In the second half, Vietnam created a few more chances but couldn’t convert them. Meanwhile, Thailand started attacking more in the last 20 minutes but their opportunities were not really relevant. They even got a red card in the last minute. The game ended with a 2-0 win for Vietnam.
The win helped Vietnam hold a great advantage in the World Cup 2023 play-off. In the next game, they will clash Chinese Taipei on February 6. Another win will secure them a place in World Cup 2023.
