Vietnam were off to a great start in the U20 Asian Cup qualifiers after defeating Hong Kong 5-1 in Indonesia on Wednesday.
Going up against a much weaker opponent, but Vietnam head coach Dinh The Nam still decided to field the strongest players.
In the first 10 minutes, Vietnam created many chances but still lacked a bit of luck to score. The team had to wait 15 minutes later to break the tie. Nguyen Anh Tu passed from the right flank to Dinh Xuan Tien inside the box and this midfielder controlled the ball well before finishing powerfully into the top corner.
The opener helped Vietnam put off the pressure and they got the second goal five minutes later from a penalty when captain Khuat Van Khang’s cross hit the arm of a Hong Kong player inside the box. On the spot, Nguyen Quoc Viet made no mistake to double the lead for Vietnam.
Vietnam continued to dominate after the break and in the 51st minute, they got the third goal from a great team play that was once again finished cleanly by Xuan Tien. Seven minutes later, captain Van Khang scored himself as he beat the keeper one-on-one.
After leading 4-0, Vietnam slowed down and let Hong Kong got one back. Van Khang fouled Chen Ngo Hin inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Vietnam keeper Doan Huy Hoang was able to save the first shot from Ellison Tsang but could not save the tap-in. The replay later showed that Chen tripped himself and there was no contact from Khang, but there was no VAR in this game and the call was made.
When there were only a few seconds left, Vietnam managed to net another goal. From a corner, Van Tu passed to Nguyen Duc Anh, who easily tapped the ball into the empty net.
Vietnam will play the next game against Timor Leste on Friday.
