Vietnam captain ignites comeback for Portuguese club

Vietnam national team captain Huynh Nhu equalized for Lank Vilaverdense and helped the club win 2-1 against Torreese in Liga BPI, the top-tier women’s league of Portugal.

Lank head coach Daniel Pachedo left Nhu on the bench in the game with Torreese on Saturday. But after a goalless first half and conceding in the 50th minute, Pachedo put Nhu on to improve the firepower. Eleven minutes after coming on, Nhu equalized for Lank.

She broke the offside trap to receive a through ball from the midfield. The Torreese goalkeeper moved forward and blocked Nhu’s shot, but the referee said that she used her hand outside the box and gave her a red card, along with a free kick for Lank. From the edge of the box, Nhu finished into the far corner, out of the keeper’s reach to equalize.

In the 71st minute, Lank completed the comeback with a goal by Rita Dias, who finished from the left flank.

This win helped Lank climb to sixth place in the league after 13 rounds with 20 points.

Nhu, 32, is one of the most decorated female footballers in Vietnam. She has won seven national championships and three National Cup titles. She’s also the recipient of four Vietnam Golden Ball awards.

The Vietnam national captain joined Lank in August last year and became the first Vietnamese female footballer to play in Europe. Nhu quickly adapted to Portugal’s football environment and has had six goals and two assists for the club so far.
