Pham Tuan Hai opened the scoring for hosts Vietnam against Syria minutes into the second half.
Going up against Syria, Vietnam put on a completely different performance compared to the previous game with Hong Kong.
The players seemed to get used to the tactics of the new coach Philippe Troussier. It’s still the same high-pressing and possession style of play, but almost everything was executed cleanly.
As usual, Vietnam pushed forward right after the game started. Compared to the last match, the passes were more accurate and the plays were more creative.
Vietnam created many relevant chances in the first half and the only problem they had was finishing. Striker Nguyen Van Tung missed two good scoring chances. Nguyen Cong Phuong’s header was only inches away from goal and so did Nguyen Tuan Anh’s long-distance shot.
In the second half, Vietnam kept the same tempo and pressure on and they found the opener in the 49th minute with a beauty from Pham Tuan Hai, who made a turn before burying it into the left corner.
After conceding, Syria tried to push back but their efforts were not enough to make Vietnam play defensively.
The hosts reduced the intensity but still control the game with possession play.
With a victory against Syria, who are five places higher on FIFA ranking, Vietnam are expected to improve their position in the next update of the ranking.
