Vietnam Airlines to employ Bamboo Airways’ excess staff

Vietnam Airlines is planning to employ pilots and flight attendants terminated during downsizings at other airlines, including Bamboo Airways, said Le Hong Ha, CEO of the national flag carrier.

Vietnam Airlines will consider its resources and employment needs to take in some excess staff who previously worked at domestic airlines, Ha said in a press interview Thursday.

He said the market should be competitive, but as the flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines was willing to support other companies to help develop the industry as a whole.

Earlier in the month, Luong Hoai Nam, CEO of Bamboo Airways, said his firm had to terminate its employment of hundreds of pilots and flight attendants in order to downsize operations

Vietjet Air has employed 50 flight attendants and 20 pilots from Bamboo Airways, while Vietnam Airlines is still considering the employment, he said.

In a November interview with VnExpress, Nam said other airlines did not want to see Bamboo Airways dissolved as there could be a global shortage of planes next year, which could lead to undersupply in the country, and having more airlines would be better for the aviation industry.

From January 2024, Bamboo Airways will switch to ground services provided by Pacific Airlines, a subsidiary of Vietnam Airlines, from its previous provider Saigon Ground Services.

“Pacific Airlines was heavily affected by the [Covid-19] pandemic and is in need of organizational and operational restructuring. Collaborating with Bamboo Airways will also provide work for Pacific Airlines’ employees,” Ha said.

Pacific Airlines currently provides ground services for the Noi Bai, Da Nang and Tan Son Nhat airports.
