Typhoon Doksuri worsening heat in northern Vietnam

For the past five days, northern Vietnam has been experiencing harsh daytime temperatures of 35-38 degrees Celsius. At night, temperatures have remained about 30 degrees, while moisture levels often drop to around 50-55%, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Hanoi is the hottest place in northern Vietnam, with certain weather stations recording temperatures of 38 degrees on Tuesday. Similar temperatures were also recorded in Hanoi on Wednesday.

Nguyen Van Huong, head of the weather forecast department at the center, said widespread heat that extends beyond the affected area of the low-pressure area in the west is due to the impacts of Typhoon Doksuri, which AP said lashed northern Philippine provinces Wednesday, leaving at least six people dead and displacing thousands of others.

While Doksuri is located far away from Vietnamese shores, it is creating wind patterns that produce clear skies and hot nights in certain Vietnamese regions, including northern Vietnam and the north-central provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh.

Current weather conditions are expected to improve starting Friday as the typhoon nears Chinese shores, causing wind effects to weaken and lessening the heat in the aforementioned areas.

U.S. weather forecast service AccuWeather says Hanoi’s temperatures were between 26-38 degrees on Wednesday, and will fall to 26-37 degrees on Thursday and 26-34 degrees on Friday.

From July 21 to August 20, average temperatures in northern and southern Vietnam are expected to be 0.5-1 degree higher than average temperatures in previous years, meteorological agencies said.
