Two Vietnamese universities among world top 1,000

Ton Duc Thang and Duy Tan universities are ranked among the 1,000 best in the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

In the 2022 ARWU by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy released on Monday, Ton Duc Thang University in Ho Chi Minh City is in the 601-700 group, the same position as last year while Duy Tan University in Da Nang City falls to the 901-1,000 group.

The ARWU is one of three prestigious and influential university rankings, alongside the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Ranking and the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

It was first published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU), Graduate School of Education (formerly the Institute of Higher Education) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and updated on an annual basis. Since 2009, it has been published and copyrighted by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, a fully independent organization on higher education intelligence and not legally subordinated to any universities or government agencies.

ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate, number of articles published in Nature and Science journals, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index in the Web of Science, and per capita performance.

More than 2500 universities are ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 are published.

For this year, Harvard University in the U.S. takes the lead for the fifth year in a row, followed by two American universities, Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In Southeast Asia, Singapore has two schools in the top 100, which are the National University of Singapore in 77th place and Nanyang Technology University in 88th. Malaysia has five schools in the top 1,000, with the University of Malaya ranked highest in the 301-400 group.

Thailand has four schools in the top 1,000, with Chulalongkorn University in the 501-600 group.
