Two Phu Quoc villas built on public land demolished

Two villas among 79 illegally built on public land in the southern island of Phu Quoc were demolished by authorities on Wednesday.

The villas, belonging to 52-year-old Vu Dinh Khanh and 49-year-old Le Xuan Hong, were built over 1,000 square meters of land. Some people came to oppose the demolition, but were all handled by authorities.

Huynh Van Nhan, chairman of the Duong To Commune People’s Committee, said authorities have performed necessary procedures before the demolition, including imposing a fine of VND7.5 million ($301.60) and a request for the owners to demolish the properties.

“It’s already past the deadline, yet the owners of the villas did not comply with authorities’ request,” Nhan said, adding that the 77 other illegally built villas will be dealt with similarly. Demolitions are expected to be completed this year, he added. The land plots will then be handed over to the Duong To Commune People’s Committee.

The 79 villas were built four years ago, before land prices in Phu Quoc skyrocketed.

The Kien Giang People’s Committee deployed a team four months ago to inspect the encroachment of public and forest land. Around 140 ha of illegally claimed forest land and land reserved for forestry have been reclaimed, and 40 tourism projects at a marine sanctuary spanning 40,000 ha were also requested to be demolished.
