A tropical depression has grown into a storm that is heading for the central coast from Da Nang to Quang Ngai Province.
The storm, the fifth formed in the East Sea this year, was 350 km from Da Nang at 1 p.m., carrying maximum winds of 74 km/h, according to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting.
By 7 a.m. Sunday, it is forecast to devolve back into a tropical depression over the coast from Da Nang and Quang Ngai Province, and pack winds of 39-61 kph.
Heavy rains and waves of up to six meters are forecast in the region, home to popular beaches.
Rainfall between Thursday and Monday could exceed 600 mm in some places between Quang Binh and Khanh Hoa provinces.
In Quang Tri and Quang Ngai it could reach up to 800 mm.
Between 1 p.m. Thursday and 1 p.m. Friday, Quang Nam received up to 126 mm of rainfall, and Thua Thien Hue Province 221 mm.
The central region was hit by Storm Noru in late September when thousands of houses were damaged and heavy rains flooded others.
