Traffic police break windshield to arrest drunk driver

A driver in northern Bac Giang Province repeatedly rammed into a police car and resisted law enforcement, forcing officers to break the windshield to incapacitate him.

A traffic police team was checking drivers’ alcohol levels on Hoang Hoa Tham Street at around 8 p.m. when officers signaled for a pickup truck to stop.

The driver, 39-year-old Nguyen Thanh Tam from Hanoi, did not stop and forced the police to use specialized vehicles to block the way.

The pickup then repeatedly rammed into the police’s vehicle and tried to back away to escape, even though there were police officers blocking the rear. The truck only stopped when officers instructed another truck to block at the tail.

The driver refused to leave the vehicle to present his papers and documents.

The police then broke the windshield at the driver’s seat to incapacitate him. Alcohol level checks revealed that he had an alcohol level at 0.595 mg per liter of breath.

Tam was then detained to be investigated for resisting law enforcement.

Vietnamese law dictates that any amount of alcohol found in a person’s system while driving will result in his or her losing their license for a period of time.

A driver with an alcohol level over 0.4 mg per liter of breath will receive the maximum fine of VND40 million ($1,643) and have their licenses revoked for 24 months.
