Thunderstorms damage over 800 houses in Mekong Delta

Thunderstorms, strong winds and high tides damaged over 800 houses in Ca Mau, Kien Giang and Bac Lieu provinces in the Mekong Delta in the past three days.

The Committee for Disaster Prevention of Ca Mau Province said Tuesday that 752 houses and more than 340 hectares of rice and other crops were destroyed, and one fishing boat sank, killing a fisherman.

The total damage is estimated at VND6 billion ($256,600).

High tides and strong waves have caused “severe” erosion along a 120m section of embankment in Tran Van Thoi District.

Bui Van Dong, head of the Ca Mau dyke management board, said there is no protective forest left in the eroded section, which allowed the waves to hit the embankment.

The storms damaged another 50 houses in Kien Giang and 25 in Bac Lieu.

According to the National Center for Hydro – Meteorological Forecasting, under the influence of an intertropical convergence zone and a low-pressure area, the coast all the way from the south-central province of Binh Thuan to Ca Mau on the southern tip will continue to have winds of 40-60 kph, rough seas and waves up to five meters high on Tuesday.
