Thailand national football coach to leave for Vietnamese club

Coach Mano Polking is set to terminate his contract with the Thailand national football team and return to Vietnam to manage the newly promoted V. League club Cong An Ha Noi.

Polking hopes to leave the Thai team to return to the V. League, following a long-term contract offer from Cong An. The Brazilian-German coach has the ambition to win a V. League title, after the previous unsuccessful attempt with HCMC FC in 2021.

The coach has scheduled an appointment with Football Association of Thailand this Thursday to ask to be released from his contract. The 47-year-old will have to pay compensation because his contract is valid until the end of 2023.

After parting ways with HCMC, Polking was appointed head coach of Thailand on a four-month contract. After winning the 2020 AFF Cup, the deal was extended.

At the SEA Games last year, he took the U23 Thailand team to the final but lost 1-0 to hosts Vietnam. Subsequently, he successfully defended the AFF Cup title with Thailand, defeating Vietnam in the final.

For the 2023 V. League season, Cong An have signed several national team players such as Phan Van Duc, Ho Tan Tai and Doan Van Hau. However, after seven games they have underperformed and peaked in fifth place with just 11 points, putting current coach Paulo Foiani under intense pressure.
