Tet comedies steal the show


Comedy stages across Ho Chi Minh City were packed with spectators seeking a laugh during the nine-day Tet (Lunar New Year) break starting Jan. 29.

Many people stood outside of the Idecaf Stage in HCMCs District 1 for hours in advance to prepare to watch Cau Dong (Uncle Dong) show, a famous play of this stage starring comedian Thanh Loc on Friday.

The ticket booth with the sign saying all tickets were completely sold out for all Tet shows. Huynh Anh Tuan, director of Idecaf, said that the stage holds two plays for six days during Tet break. Both shows were sold out when they were open for sale half a month ago. We are surprised to see such high attendances, its perhaps because the audience has not been to a comedy show for a long time so they reminisce the atmosphere of a live performance.

More than 330 spectators filled the venue. Tuan reveals that Idecaf plans to recreate many of its famous plays, saying this is an opportunity for the younger audiences to enjoy many of our classic plays.

At stage 5B on Vo Van Tan Street, a group of comedians performed a comedy skit Suong Qua Xuan (Happiness During Spring), making the play first debut to the public. My Uyen, one of the performer at 5B Stage, said that the crew came up the script and concept one month in advance of the Lunar New Year. She said that besides performing old plays, staff worked hard to create something new to serve the audience during Tet.

After a months-long lockdown, cinemas in HCMC and some other places opened in November, 2021.
