An 18-year-old boy in the Mekong Delta’s Vinh Long Province was arrested after raping a 12-year-old girl when he gave her a ride home.
Duong Nhat Du, 18, was arrested by police of Vung Liem District to be investigated for “Raping a person under 16.”
On October 8, an acquaintance asked Du to give the girl a ride home from a local food stall. Instead, Du brought her to a grass field where few people came by, before raping her.
He then took the girl home and told her to take emergency contraceptive pills. The girl told her family what happened and they reported the matter to the police.
Du has admitted to his crime.
Those charged with raping a person under 16 can receive a jail sentence of seven to 15 years. They can get a death sentence if the act is gang rape, or causes serious physical or mental damage, or if the victim is less than 10 years old.
