Reigning champions Hanoi T&T defeated Hoang Anh Gia Lai 3-2 in the last match of the Thanh Nien newspaper’s U21 Football Championships qualifying round in Can Tho City Tuesday, despite having secured a slot in the semifinals.
HAGL’s goalkeeper Nguyen Van Tien successfully saved a penalty of Do Hung Dung in the 11th minute at the Military Zone No. 9 Stadium.
The capital city team had more of the ball and led 1-0 in the first half with a goal by Pham Van Thanh in the 16th minute.
Ngan Van Dai scored the second goal for Hanoi T&T just five minutes into the second half in a counterattack.
Vu Van Thanh’s accurate shot inside the far corner of Hanoi T&T provided HAGL fans with a glimmer of hope, and in the 73rd minutes the Central Highlands team leveled the score 2-2 with a goal by Trieu Viet Hung.
In injury time, Tran Van Kien passed Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s goalkeeper Pham Van Tien before scoring the third goal to secure Hanoi T&T’s 3-2 win.
In the other Group B’s match, Song Lam Nghe An crushed Vinh Long at Can Tho Stadium to advance to semifinals with a double by Ho Phuc Tinh and another goal by Vo Ly.
The first semifinal match between SHB Da Nang and Song Lam Nghe An will kick off at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (October 9). The other match will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday (October 10) between Hanoi T&T and Dong Thap.
