Southeast Vietnam to become major development hub: Party chief

Vietnam will build its Southeast region into an area that connects development of the Mekong Delta, Central Highlands region, and the nation as a whole, says Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong.

In particular, HCMC will emerge as an economic hub, an international financial center and a destination for the middle class and the intelligentsia, especially young talents, Trong said Sunday at a national conference.

Chairing the conference on a resolution of the Politburo on socio-economic development and ensuring national defense and security in the Southeastern region by 2030 with a vision until 2045, he said HCMC’s development level was on par with major Asian cities, and a force for growth in the Southeast region and the country.

The Southeast region includes HCMC and the provinces of Tay Ninh, Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Ba Ria – Vung Tau.

It was pointed out at the conference that the resolution has clearly stated that by 2030, the Southeast region will: rapidly develop a smart and modern urban system; complete inter-regional and regional transport systems; regional and global integration; and become a leading region in culture, society, education and healthcare development in the country.

HCMC has been envisioned as a civilized, modern, dynamic and creative city; a place that attracts especially high-quality human resources including experts, scientists and other talented people; and an international financial center that develops on par with major cities in Asia.

In the vision until 2045, Southeast Vietnam will become a developed region with strong economic potential and a modern economic structure; one of the top technology and innovation centers; a region with medical and educational qualifications among the best in Southeast Asia; and a high quality of life for its residents.

General Secretary Trong advised the region to focus on perfecting development institutions and policies as well as promoting regional linkages in science and technology development, innovation, human resource development and improvement of urban infrastructure.

In 2020, the gross regional product (GRDP) of the Southeast region increased by 4.9 times over 2005 and 2.6 times over 2010. The region contributed 32% of the country’s GDP and 44.7% of the total state budget revenue that year. The per capita income of the region was the highest in the country that year.
