Vietnamese police have summoned eight young men to investigate their harassment of a French woman in the central province of Quang Binh last week.
Police in Quang Binh’s Bo Trach District on Thursday called in Nguyen Thanh Hien, 23, Tran Van Thuan, 26, Le Dung Sy, 22, Tran Hai Dang, 22, Le Mau Thanh, 29, Le Quang Trung, 23, Ngo Hai Dang, 21, and Bui Duc Phung, 17, to question them regarding their treatment of E.M., a 29-year-old French woman.
After deciding that their actions were not serious enough to be treated criminally, police chose to give them administrative penalties.
The police had received a report from E.M., and after an investigation, they suspected these youths to be the culprits, so they summoned them for questioning, said Senior Lieutenant Colonel Dang Van Hoanh, the district police chief.
The young men, all local residents, admitted their wrongdoings and said they teased the women for fun after a drinking party.
According to E.M.’s report, at 11 pm on September 7, she was driving a motorbike in the district’s Hung Trach Commune when she was stopped by the young men, who appeared on three bikes.
The incident occurred when she was on her way from Cu Nam Commune to Son Trach Commune, where the well-known Phong Nha Cave is located.
The group of youths then began sexually harassing her, the victim said.
E.M. managed to speed away and escape the harassers, and rushed to the Phong Nha police station to report the incident.
After investigating and screening numerous possible culprits, police targeted the above eight young men, who later admitted that they wanted to tease the woman when they saw her travelling alone.
