Six rhinos in a tourism site in central Vietnam’s Nghe An Province have been found dead with unknown causes.
Nguyen An Tuan, deputy head of the Nghe An forest protection department, on September 16 confirmed the death of the rhinos at the Muong Thanh Dien Lam eco-tourism site in Dien Chau District. Each rhino weighs over 1.1 tons, he added.
The two-horned rhhinos were brought from Africa to Vietnam many years ago. In the days before their death, their health was normal. They were living in the same enclosure, spanning thousands of m2.
Police of Nghe An had taken over 10 samples for disease testing to figure out their causes of death.
Besides the dead rhinos, the site still has three other rhinos.
The Muong Thanh Dien Lam eco-tourism site has a total are of 300 ha. It was built in 2014, located 60 km away from Vinh City and 240 km away from Hanoi. It is home to several rare animal species, like tigers, rhinos, elephants and giraffes, which are raised for tourism purposes.
Two-horned rhinos are the smallest species of rhinos that still exists. Their horns are forbidden to be hunted, traded, stored or transported under CITES.
