Singapore investigates complaints of 20 tourists abandoned after refusing to buy souvenirs

A group of 20 tourists from China have claimed they were abandoned on Race Course Road in Singapore by their bus driver after they declined to purchase souvenirs from him.

Video footage on TikTok shows the tourists arguing with the driver while standing on the road with their bags and luggage.

The incident occurred in the Little India District around noon on Aug. 16 when the tourists were visiting temples in the area as part of a 10-day tour of Southeast Asian countries, according to the Shin Min Daily News. The tour had been arranged through a Chinese travel agency.

One of the tourists recounted that the driver attempted to sell souvenirs to the passengers, but they refused. This angered the driver, who then scolded the group for not buying anything, Asia One reported.

When the tourists asked the driver to apologize, he refused, unloaded their bags, and drove away, leaving them stranded on the street for four hours.

The tourists have since filed a complaint with the Chinese Embassy in Singapore, which acknowledged the incident and sent a bus to assist the tourists.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has stated that it is investigating the matter.

“STB will not tolerate any behavior that disrespects or endangers tourists. We will not hesitate to take action against operators who engage in poor tourism practices,” the board stated, as quoted by The New Paper.

“We are committed to maintaining Singapore’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for all travelers.”
