A single mother with two children, I recently met a South Korean man who is five years older than me, unmarried, and childless.
My eldest child is at university, and the younger one is in high school. My husband passed away when our younger kid was just over a year old, and I have been a single parent since then. My job as a public officer brings in about VND10 million (US$411) monthly, making raising two children quite challenging.
As my children have grown more independent, I have found more time for myself. Joining groups for single people worldwide, I have met new people, learned a lot about different cultures, and broadened my horizons.
I started talking with a South Korean man recently. He lives with his elderly mother near Seoul and has a manager-level position at his company, rather than working in manual labor or engineering.
He has proposed marriage to me and has said that my younger child and I can move to South Korea, as my older child prefers to stay in Vietnam for career prospects. He said I can spend time learning the language and adjusting to South Korean life at first before eventually finding a job so that I can contribute to our family financially.
I admire his dedication and his willingness to commit to spending the rest of his life with me. Despite years of single parenthood, I still seek companionship, especially as my children are now more self-sufficient.
However, marrying a foreigner and relocating abroad is daunting to me. My knowledge of South Korean life is limited, leaving me with concerns about potential challenges, including employment prospects at my age. I cannot predict which obstacles I may have to deal with after relocating there either.
Alternatively, staying in Vietnam means continuing my current job for about five more years and then enjoying a modest, peaceful retirement.
What should I do? Can someone, especially those with experience in South Korea, give me advice?
