Severe cold wave ends in northern Vietnam

As cold air weakens, a severe cold wave lasting 10 days has ended in northern Vietnam, save for certain mountainous regions like tourist town Sa Pa.

Most northern Vietnam localities saw rising temperatures starting Tuesday. Hanoi’s temperature was at around 10 degrees Celsius, before rising to 23 degrees at noon, its highest temperature since Dec. 16. Temperatures at high-altitude locations like Lao Cai’s Sa Pa were around 5 degrees in the morning, before rising to 13 degrees at noon.

As the mass of cold air is weakening, northern Vietnam regions would get warmer and cloudier starting Tuesday night, with temperatures rising by 1-2 degrees each day.

U.S. weather forecast service AccuWeather anticipated that Hanoi’s temperatures at night would increase to 16-19 degrees, with daytime temperatures rising towards 26 degrees on the weekends. High-altitude locations like Sa Pa would also see temperatures rising to 9-18 degrees.

Central Vietnam regions would be cloudy for the next two days, with certain central areas seeing rain at night and in the morning starting Dec. 30.

Temperatures on the final days of the year in areas from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue are forecast to be around 22-25 degrees. Localities from Da Nang to Binh Dinh will see temperatures at 24-27 degrees, and localities from Khanh Hoa to Binh Thuan will see temperatures at 29-31 degrees, according to AccuWeather.

Southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands are currently in their dry season, so there will be little rain until New Year’s Eve. Temperatures in the Central Highlands would be around 16-19 degrees, while southern Vietnam will see temperatures at 23-25 degrees. Daytime temperatures in southern Vietnam can be at 34 degrees, the U.S. site said.

In January next year, there might fewer severely cold days and average temperatures nationwide are expected to be 0.5-1 degree higher, meteorological agencies said.
