Runner wears fridge on back for training, mistaken for thief

Daniel Fairbrother was questioned by the police for thinking he was a thief during his training to set a Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon run with a fridge on his back.

According to the BBC, Fairbrother was running in his hometown of Stevenage, Hertfordshire (about 30 km from London) when he was stopped by a police patrol last month.

“You understand we’ve got to stop you, is that a fridge on your back?” a police officer said.

After Fairbrother explained his marathon challenge, the police officer cracked a joke and wished him the best in his training.

Fairbrother came up with the idea of setting the fastest marathon record with a fridge on his back during a drunken night with his friends. Currently, this record belongs to British runner Sam Hammond with 4 hours, 52 minutes and 10 seconds at the 2023 London Marathon.

Fairbrother aims to break the record at this year’s London Marathon, which will be held on April 21, the New York Post reported.

His goal is not only to set a world record but also to donate at least £10,000 (US$12,670) to Diabetes U.K., one of the U.K.’s leading diabetes charities.

He said he wants to support his best friend Sam, who is a Type 1 diabetic who has been with him “through thick and thin.”
