HÀ NỘI — A cold spell will hit northern Việt Nam this week, which has rarely been seen in May over the past 11 years, according to forecasters.

Deputy Director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Hoàng Phúc Lâm said temperatures will drop to 20-23 degree Celsius in Red River Delta, even 16 or lower in mountainous areas.

Heavy rains may appear, particularly in northern mountainous areas, as well as lightning, hailstorms and strong winds between May 13 and 15.

People are advised to keep a close watch on the weather forecasts and stay alert in high-risk areas against landslides and floods.

Communication work must be bolstered to urge boats to take safety measures amid rough seas.

According to the weather centre, it has not been this cold in May since 2011.

Experts forecast that the common temperature in May to July and October in northern region this year is approximately equal to the average of previous years.

From August to September 2022, the common temperature will be 0.5 – 1 degree Celsius higher than that of many years.

The centre forecasts that up to 10-12 typhoons and tropical depressions will enter the East Sea until the end of this year, 4-6 of which will directly affect Việt Nam. — – VnExpress News
