Python thwarted entering home for chicken feast

At around 8 p.m., Dao Thi Son was attending to her family’s chicken coop in Loc Ha District when she saw a python chasing her chickens. She tried to chase the python away, and ended up calling local authorities to help with the matter.

Forest rangers caught and caged the python within minutes of arriving at the scene.

Specialists said the python was 4 meters long, weighing 32 kilograms.

“This is the largest Indian python ever found in Loc Ha District,” said Nguyen Xuan Man, head of the Loc Ha District Forest Protection Department.

Authorities said the python must have escaped captivity while being kept domestically by a local household. There is no natural habitat in the area suitable for the species to live in, they said.

The python currently in the custody of the forest protection department. The department has contacted Vu Quang National Park in hopes the snake can be released back into the wild there.

The Indian python (Python molurus) is on Vietnam’s Red List of endangered species. Hunting and loss of habitat are threatening the reptile’s survival.
