Around 2.3 tons of dead, smelly chickens were about to be processed into food products when Dong Nai police busted an illegal abattoir Wednesday night.
After nights of monitoring, environmental police and veterinary authorities raided a poultry abattoir in Bien Hoa Town of the southern province owned by 44-year-old Tran Thi Ngoc Thuong.
Four workers were dumping 2.3 tons of dead and smelly chicken from a truck on the abattoir floor when the raid happened. The chickens would have their feathers removed, before being shipped elsewhere for human consumption.
Thuong failed to show neither her business license nor invoices for the chicken that had been brought to her abattoir. She said the facility has been operating for over a month and the dead chickens were bought from a woman at VND4,000 (16 U.S. cents) per kilogram. The chickens would eventually be shipped to Dong Nai and HCMC, mainly to facilities making gio and cha (meat paste).
All the dead chickens have been handed over to relevant agencies to be disposed of.
Further details about the bust and follow up action were not immediately available.
