Phu Quoc to get coastal road to access public beaches

A four-kilometer coastal road will be built on Phu Quoc Island to provide visitors with access to public beaches.

Kien Giang, the province that is home to the island, the biggest in Vietnam and a top tourist attraction, recently approved the construction of the six-lane road on the western coast.

It will run between the Duong Dong River and Provincial Road 975B.

Also to be built are an embankment, drainage system, sidewalks, and a lighting system, and trees will be planted along the road.

The work will start in 2024 and take five years to complete.

Despite Phu Quoc’s status as a tourist hotspot, there is an admitted dearth of infrastructure, especially coastal roads and public beaches near the center of Duong Dong town.

Most of its best beaches are inside resorts.

A report on Kien Giang’s official website on Dec. 14 said Phu Quoc attracted 5.4 million tourists this year, up 14.5% from the same period last year but only 90.7% of this year’s targeted figure.

They included 521,332 foreigners, a 211.3% increase and well above the target.
