Phu Quoc speedboats halt operations due to storm

Speedboats to Phu Quoc and nearby Nam Du and Hon Son islands have stopped operating due to storm Talim, with the southern sea at risk of thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Vo Minh Tuan, deputy director of the Kien Giang Province Port Authority, confirmed the suspension of both speedboats and high-speed ferries departing from the province’s coastal cities Rach Gia, Ha Tien to Phu Quoc and other islands and vice-versa, until further notice.

Phu Quoc Island is 120 km from Rach Gia to the east and 45 km from Ha Tien to the west. There are more than 30 speedboats from the mainland to Phu Quoc every day. Boat and ferry tickets that have been purchased can be returned or rescheduled.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that at 4 p.m. on Sunday, storm Talim was about 510 km southeast of China’s Leizhou Peninsula with a maximum wind speed of 117 kph. It is forecasted that on Tuesday night, the storm will be in the northern Gulf of Tonkin.

In the next 24 hours, showers, thunderstorms and tornadoes may take place over the sea from Ca Mau to Kien Giang, including Phu Quoc.
