One killed as SUV causes series of crashes in Hanoi

The Hyundai Santa Fe car hit two cars parked in front of a house at 15 Ngo Thi Nham Street at around 9 p.m. on Thursday before plowing into a military car and eight motorbikes that were stopping at a red light at the corner of Ngo Thi Nham and Quang Trung streets.

“I heard a very loud bang and when I rushed out, I saw vehicles fallen all over the place and people crying out,” an eyewitness said.

The accident killed a Hanoi woman aged 46 and injured five others.

According to the police, the SUV driver is Ha Thanh Hung, 45. Hung is a native in the northern Yen Bai Province and currently lives and works in Hanoi.

Eyewitnesses said the driver seemed drunk. They said the consequences could have been much more serious if his car had not hit into the military car first.

He is now under arrest for further investigation.
