One dead, two missing as floods, landslides ravage central Vietnam

At least one was confirmed dead and two others missing as prolonged downpours triggered floods and landslides in central provinces over the past two days.

In Quang Nam, the body of a 37-year-old woman in Nui Thanh District who was swept away by floodwaters on Monday afternoon was found the same day.

Authorities in Tam Ky Town said they are searching for a man who was reported missing on Monday night.

Over the past two days, Quang Nam, home to Hoi An ancient town, was hit by heavy downpours with rainfall of up to 350 mm.

Around a two-hour-drive from Quang Nam, Quang Ngai also suffered heavy rains since Sunday night.

Many areas in mountainous districts of Son Ha and Tra Bong in Quang Ngai were flooded, with roads and bridges submerged under water by around one meter on Monday.

Landslide poured down Ka Tinh hydropower plant in Tra Bong District at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, leaving a worker missing.

Local authorities are trying to approach the scene.

Heavy rains in the region have been caused by a combination of the northeast monsoon winds and a cold spell from the north, according to the National Center for Hydro -Meteorological Forecasting.

The center warns that from Monday to Tuesday, floods are likely to occur on rivers from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai, with water levels rising by three to seven meters upstream and one to three meters downstream and more flash floods and landslides should be expected.
