Northern Vietnam to receive heavy rains for a week

Localities in northern Vietnam will experience heavy rainfall and strong winds from Wednesday night to Sep. 14, meteorologists say.

According to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Center, the impacts of an inter-tropical convergence zone in combination with eastern winds will end a string of dry days in the north.

The coastal region and low-land areas are expected to have rainfall of 50-100mm and up to 120 mm in some places from the early morning of Thursday until Friday.

In this period, Hanoi should expect rainfall of 40-80 mm and more than 100 mm in some areas.

As the rain will be accompanied by strong winds, mountainous areas should beware of landslides and flash floods, the center warns.

The rains will continue for several days after Friday, easing off after Sept. 12 and ending by Sept. 14.

The heavy rains will cause temperatures to drop by 4-6 degrees from current levels to 24-28 degrees Celsius in Hanoi and 17-21 degrees Celsius in the mountainous town of Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province.
