Northern Vietnam set for weekend drenching

Hanoi and other northern Vietnam regions would experience heavy rain from Friday to Monday, with potential risks of flooding and landslides in mountainous areas, weather experts warn.

A convergence zone is getting established above mountainous regions in northern Vietnam, triggering rain of 100-200 mm in the area from Friday night to Monday, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

The rain will first be concentrated in mountainous and midland areas, before expanding towards the plains and the coasts.

Temperatures in Hanoi would fall to between 27-35 degrees Celsius Friday with maximum temperature falling further to 31 degrees Sunday, according to U.S. weather forecast service AccuWeather.

High-altitude locations like Lao Cai’s Sa Pa would see temperatures of 18-22 degrees Celsius, it predicted.

Hot sunny days are expected to continue in certain central Vietnam regions this weekend, with temperatures of 35-37 degrees Celsius and 55-70 percent humidity.

The National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has advised people to stay home and away from wet locations and electrical appliances amid a thunderstorm to avoid risks of electrocution and getting struck by lightning.

Around 44 people have been killed in 36 lightning strike incidents across the country this year, the center said.
