Netflix removes K-drama ‘Little Women’ from Vietnam roster over history distortion complaint

A Netflix representative on Thursday said the movie was removed from Netflix in Vietnam “in accordance with a document by the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information under the Ministry of Information and Communications.”

The movie was requested to be removed for violating media and cinema laws due to the actors’ inaccurate statements about the Vietnam War in episodes 3 and 8.

Le Quang Tu Do, head of the authority, said Netflix removed the movie by 3 p.m. Thursday.

“Netflix has always upheld and abided by the laws and agreements regarding contents with violations. However, due to the large number of films, they admitted to still have mistakes. Netflix said it would ramp up self-monitoring and minimize mistakes,” Do added.

Netflix is also looking into regulations to open either a representative office or a company in Vietnam, he said.

In July last year, the streaming giant also withdrew six episodes of its spy drama “Pine Gap” after regulators found it contained “illegal images” of the infamous “nine-dash line.”

The K-drama Netflix series “Little Women”, an adaptation from the classic novel “Little Women” but with a different spin to suit Korean taste, premiered in September.

The film, directed by Jung Seo Kyung and produced by Kim Hee Won, follows the impoverished three sisters, Oh In-Joo (Kim Go Eun), Oh In Kyung (Nam Ji Hyun), and Oh In Hye (Park Park. Ji Hoo).
