Nearly half of job seekers want a monthly salary of $850 upwards

Over 46% of job seekers want a monthly salary higher than VND20 million ($850), but firms are only able to pay this level to less than 11% of job vacancies.

The report on the HCMC labor market by the HCMC Center of Forecasting Manpower Needs and Labor Market Information under the municipal Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs also showed that among nearly 7,500 job seekers, nearly 20% expect a monthly salary of VND15-20 million, 23% a salary of VND10-15 million and 10% a salary of 5-10 million.

Only 0.75% of those surveyed asked for a monthly salary of less than VND5 million. They want to become part-time employees, wedding caterers, or staff at amusement parks.

When surveying nearly 2,000 businesses that want to recruit over 28,500 people, the center found that the monthly salary of over VND20 million on offer accounted for less than 11% of the total, the salary of VND5-10 million nearly 45%, and the salary of below VND5 million more than 4%.

According to recruitment agencies, the salary expectation of job seekers this year is quite high compared to ability of companies to pay.

In a salary survey recently released by Navigos Group, over 45% of the 4,170 respondents want an annual salary increase of 10% or more.

For people who want to change jobs, more than 19% expect a salary increase of at least 30%, and over 19% eye a rise of at least 20%.

Meanwhile, nearly 27% of enterprises participating in the 2023 salary survey said they will hike salaries by 5-10%, some 23% will keep salaries unchanged, 15% will increase salaries by less than 5%, and 12% will raise salaries by 10-15%.

According to the recruitment site Viec Lam Tot, in the first 6 months of this year, the average salary is likely to increase by 5-10%, mainly in the F&B and retail sectors.

However, many sectors are still affected by fluctuations in world markets, so in the future some local businesses will have to reduce production and personnel costs, said Tran Minh Ngoc, director of Viec Lam Tot.
