As many as 458 individuals experienced symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting after consuming food prepared with potentially norovirus-contaminated spring water at a restaurant in southwest Japan.
The incident occurred at the Ryokan Kurotakesou inn in Yufu, Oita Prefecture, where more than 500 guests visited between Aug. 10 and 12, Japanese media reported.
The affected included over 130 individuals aged 78 and older.
Initially, on Aug. 13, only 28 cases were reported; however, this number quickly escalated.
The inn used carbonated spring water for dishes like somen cold noodles and jidori-yaki grilled chicken, according to a report by Mainichi.
The prefecture government has confirmed the presence of norovirus in patients, raising concerns about the safety of the spring water used in the inn’s food preparation.
Two people were briefly hospitalized, though their conditions were not severe. All affected individuals have since experienced only mild symptoms, Jiji Press noted.
An ongoing investigation aims to pinpoint the exact source of the contamination, and the inn has been ordered to close during this period.
