Nearly 1,300 int’l referees to join SEA Games in Vietnam

Around 1,290 international referees will officiate in 40 sports of SEA Games 31 in Vietnam next month.

Organizers also revealed that 2,085 domestic referees would join the event. To manage 40 sports with 526 categories in 11 provinces and cities, 737 organizing representatives have also been mobilized to these localities.

The only sport without any Vietnamese or Southeast Asian referee is football.

SEA Games 31, hosted by Vietnam, will take place from May 12 to 23, with the participation of roughly 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials.

Vietnam are the delegation with the greatest number of members (1,372), including 407 officials, doctors, coaches and experts, and 965 athletes (534 males, 431 females).

Following Vietnam are Thailand with 1,127 members, of which 888 are athletes, and the Philippines with 947 members, including 643 athletes

Brunei have the least number of participants with 33 (nine officials and 24 athletes).

A delegation can replace a member with another one if they get Covid-19.

The number of participants can still be changed until May 6, when the official list of members for each delegation must be confirmed.

SEA Games 31 was originally scheduled to take place in November last year, but was moved to May 2022 due to Covid-19. Most of the sports in this event are featured in the Olympics.

This is the second time that Vietnam hosts the SEA Games, after the first in 2003.
