Mother, children killed in Hanoi bedding factory fire

A mother and her two preschool children were killed Saturday afternoon after a bedding factory in Hanoi caught fire.

The fire broke out at around 4:30 p.m at a bedding showroom and warehouse in Thanh Van Commune, Thanh Oai District. It then spread to the factory nearby.

Around 15 people who were working there escaped. But Vu Thi Vi, 29, daughter-in-law of the factory’s owner, and her two children, Nguyen Trong Gia Huy, 5, and Nguyen Kim An, 4, were burned badly and died later at the National Institute of Burns, around 15 km away.

It took two hours for six fire trucks to put the fire out, as the factory and warehouse were packed with highly-flammable fabric, cotton and foam mattresses. The fire could be seen from half a kilometer away, a video showed.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire. Initial assessment is that it could have been caused by welding as the factory was undergoing repairs.
