Amelia Tu, Miss Universe Canada 2022, chose a dress designed by Dang The Huy and Huynh Hai Long for the evening gown competition of the Miss Universe semi-finals on Friday.
Following her performance, beauty pageant lovers in her hometown expressed excitement about the gown.
The Vietnamese designers worked with Tu’s team for almost a year before deciding on an evening gown inspired by the pavo.
“The conventional outfits were completed in a matter of weeks, however the gown for Amelia Tu took us more than two months to finish,” Long said. “Our hard work paid off when we saw how beautiful she looked in that dress.”
According to the designers, the gown was made from high-quality crocheted lace fabric produced in Europe.
The designers used ostrich feathers, which they deodorized multiple times to prevent mold. They then disassembled the fabric into their component pieces, and finally reassembled this into patterns. As a result, the feathers look more natural and are able to flutter more freely in the wind.

Huy and Long had to sculpt the feathers using Japanese silk thread and Koma silver. These two threads are colorful, have some elasticity to assist the whole garment stay in place, and are not abrasive.
The dress’s focal point is the sea of thousands of distinct large and small crystals that make the gown look bedazzling under the light while Tu is moving around the stage.
Long said that the design is the most comprehensive and all-encompassing one that he has ever created.
The designers traveled to Canada two months before the Miss Universe semi-finals to make final adjustments to Amelia Tu’s gown for the competition.
The 71st Miss Universe pageant will wrap up Saturday in New Orleans.
Harnaaz Sandhu, Miss Universe 2021 from India, will crown her successor.
Long earned a degree in drama from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema. He took first place in the 2009 Vietnam Collection Grandprix competition.
Huy is Long’s mentor.
Their collection were showcased at New York Fashion Week last September.
The two Vietnamese designers have participated in several fashion shows over the last 12 years, including the China Fashion Designers Creation Contest in Shanghai and the Tokyo Fashion Show in Japan.
