Man traffics drugs hidden inside vitamin bottles from Canada to Vietnam

A man is being investigated for smuggling MDMA tablets from Canada into Vietnam by hiding them in vitamin C bottles.

Tay Ho District police in Hanoi said Friday that Vietnamese-Canadian Phung Duc Quan, 37, had been put under investigation for drug trafficking.

Two other men Vu Khuong, 27, and Vu Diem Quynh, 23, are also being investigated on the same charge.

Quan and his family relocated to Canada 33 years ago. Since 2021, he has often returned to Vietnam to visit relatives, temporarily staying in Hanoi’s Nam Tu Liem District.

In April, Quan agreed to receive a batch of drugs hidden inside bottles of vitamin C, which were sent from Canada to Vietnam through via post, investigators said.

Quan then gave the drugs to Khuong and Quynh who sold them for profit.

On April 24, Khuong was caught selling drugs red-handed in Tay Ho. Authorities found over 100 MDMA pills during the bust. A search at Khuong’s abode uncovered a further 433 pills.

At Quan’s residence, authorities found over 806 grams of drugs, as well as several objects laced with drugs.

Vietnam Customs said Thursday drug trafficking through air routes has been getting more complicated and widespread in recent months.

From January to April, the amount of drugs found trafficked through air routes was already more than the previous five years combined.

The traffickers were mostly Vietnamese living abroad who cooperated with drug dealers living in the country.
